Kansas City Freecycle – List Rules
http://www.kcfreecycle.org/rules/

Greetings, fellow Freecycle members – welcome to Kansas City Freecycle!

Please read this document, as well as
List Netiquette – http://www.kcfreecycle.org/netiquette/
and Terms of Service (TOS) – http://www.kcfreecycle.org/tos/
before participating in the group!

Participation in KC Freecycle constitutes an expressed agreement of all three. Please note that the Rules, TOS, and Netiquette are applicable both on- AND off-list!

Below are the KC Freecycle List Rules, all of which are strictly enforced (there are two versions – the “Short Form”, for quick reference, and the “Long Form”, with more detailed explanations of each rule). Those who violate the rules will receive one strike (unless otherwise noted) and will be placed on moderation indefinitely. Upon your second strike, you will be removed from the list – two strikes and you’re out!

While we do welcome both for-profits (“resellers”) and non-profits, they must follow the same rules as other list members, with special provisions. If you’re a reseller or non-profit, please pay attention to the sections entitled “Resellers” and “Non-profits”, at the end of the document.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kansas City Freecycle Network – List Rules (Short Form)
1) KC Freecycle is geared towards the following counties, all in Kansas or Missouri: Cass, Clay, Jackson, Johnson, Leavenworth, Platte and Wyandotte. Please only participate if you live in or closely around these areas.
2) ALL items listed must be 100% FREE.
3) Do not post ads for inappropriate, illegal, or otherwise restricted items (including requests for/offers of live animals, services, information, and intangibles).
4) Members may post one “wanted” email per calendar week, containing requests for as many items as they like.
5) No spam, no politics, no religion, and no invites to other groups or events!
6) Inappropriate behavior is not tolerated.
Kansas City Freecycle Network – List Rules (Long Form)
(These are enforced – two strikes and you’re out!)
1) KC Freecycle is geared towards the following counties, all in Kansas or Missouri: Cass, Clay, Jackson, Johnson, Leavenworth, Platte and Wyandotte. Please only participate if you live in or closely around these areas.
If you live outside of our service area, don’t despair! – You can always start a freecycle list in your own city. Go to the Freecycle Network’s site at www.freecycle.org for more info.
2) ALL items listed must be 100% FREE. If you’re trying to get rid of an item, you must be giving it away – do not list it for sale. If you’re seeking an item, please do not post an offer of money, even if you’re willing to pay for the item and/or shipping or delivery. Trading/bartering is also not allowed, nor are general inquiries as to where an item may be purchased.
As with all the List Rules & Netiquette, this rule applies both on- AND off-list. Thus, members are not allowed to respond to “wanteds” off-list with an offer to sell the poster the item s/he is seeking. Nor are members allowed to “offer” an item on-list and then request compensation for it off-list.
If you are holding a garage or yard sale, and wish to freecycle the leftovers, please do not post an OFFER until the items are available for pickup – no more than an hour or two before the sale concludes on its final day. All the items listed must be free; offering a few freebies amongst piles of “for sale” items is not okay. KC Freecycle is not the proper venue for members to advertise their garage sales; there are many other Yahoo groups for that purpose.
Additionally, members are not allowed to include signatures or “sigs” in their group-related emails. Please just sign your emails with your name (and it doesn’t have to be your full name, either – just whatever moniker you go by), email address and/or phone number (whichever you prefer), and refrain from advertising your business, linking to your web site, including your children’s names and ages, etc.
Basically, Kansas City Freecycle should not be used as a venue for list members to make money.
If you want to buy/sell/trade, please go to our web site at www.kcfreecycle.org for a list of local classified forums.
Requests to BORROW an item are allowed, as long as they do not involve money (obviously, this disqualifies offers of/requests for RENTING items). “Borrowing” is defined by the moderators as taking physical possession of an item for a period of time (i.e., “borrowing” another member’s services, time, expertise, etc. is not allowed – if a physical item does not change hands, it is not considered borrowing). Requests to borrow items are treated the same as “wanteds” (see Rule #4 for more on “wanteds”). It should be noted that Kansas City Freecycle, including its moderators and list owners, assume no responsibility for the lending/borrowing of items on Kansas City Freecycle. Lend and borrow at your own risk!
3) Do not post ads for inappropriate, illegal, or otherwise restricted items (including requests for/offers of live animals, services, information, and intangibles).
In order to be permitted to use the term “Freecycle”, we have to abide by the following rules (says Deron Beal, creator of the first Freecycle group): “Keep it free, legal, and appropriate for all ages”.
Thus, we cannot allow any illegal items (obviously), nor any “adult” items, such as pornography, weapons, and alcohol. We have a comprehensive list of restricted items on our website at http://www.kcfreecycle.org/restricted/.
We also do not allow members to offer or request live animals. If you need to place an animal (or if you’d like to adopt one), we’ve compiled a list of resources to help you out. The list can be accessed at http://www.kcfreecycle.org/animals-and-freecycle/, along with other resources regarding animal adoption (and a more detailed explanation of our “no animals” policy).
Note: when we say “no animals,” we mean “no animals.” In addition to “real” animals like dogs, cats, pigs, cows, hamsters and parrots, we also prohibit fish, spiders, ants, mice, worms, etc. Basically, the only live beings allowed on KC Freecycle are plants.
Requests for OR offers of services (such as “WANTED: mechanic”), information (“OFFER: automotive advice”), and other intangibles (“WANTED: a ride to Wichita”) are also not allowed.
Think of KC Freecycle as a parking lot, where members bring items to be recycled; could you bring a ride to Wichita and physically give it to another person? No. The purpose of freecycle is to keep ITEMS out of landfills; a ride to Wichita can never end up in a garbage can. Thus, intangible wants or offers don’t belong on this particular list.
Finally, members may not receive any kind of financial gain by offering items on KC Freecycle, including but not limited to offering catalogs, brochures, pamphlets, coupons, or gift certificates to any business or company they may own, operate, or be employed by. Kansas City Freecycle is not to be used as a venue to advertise your business.
While the moderators of KC Freecycle will monitor the board and remove any illegal and/or inappropriate items to the best of their ability, ultimately it’s the responsibility of each individual list member to follow all applicable local, state, and federal laws, as well as KC Freecycle Rules.
4) Members must observe the following rules when requesting items (that is, sending “wanteds” to the list):
* Members can send out ONE “wanted” email per calendar week (Sunday through Saturday).
* This ONE email can contain requests for as many items as you’d like; however, please be reasonable!
* If a member sends out more than ONE “wanted” email per calendar week, all but the first email will be deleted. Members are not allowed to send out an “update” or “correction” to the original email – once the email has been sent, you must wait until the next calendar week to send a second email. (Although existing messages can be deleted from the Yahoo group archives, they will remain in the inboxes of those members who have elected to receive Individual Emails or Daily Digests; thus, there is no way to “undo” a message once it’s been submitted.)
* Members violating these rules will initially receive a reminder email from the moderators; if they violate this rule a second time, the member may receive a strike.
* Members are responsible for keeping track of when they last sent a “wanted” to the list. You can do so by saving your Freecycle emails in a specially designated folder in your email software; searching the Yahoo Group archives at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kcfreecycle/messages; or emailing the list moderators at kcfreecycle-owner [at] yahoogroups [dot] com with your inquiry.
Please remember that KC Freecycle isn’t your personal wish list or gift registry; rather, we’re a communal recycle bin and online dumpster. So please try to avoid asking for a car or flat-screen TV – after all, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll get one, and such extravagant requests tend to irritate other list members.
If you’re unsure whether your “wanted” is appropriate, please email the moderators at kcfreecycle-owner [at] yahoogroups [dot] com BEFORE sending your request to the list – after all, why risk a strike when you can just ask us first?
5) No spam, no politics, no religion, and no invitations to other groups!
All of the following will be considered “spam”: action alerts; newsletters; petitions; political messages; chain letters; MLMs; advertisements; and invitations to other Yahoo groups, and well as lists, forums, clubs, events, etc. (only the moderators may announce new groups!). Basically, anything not directly related to Freecycle could qualify as spam. Spam is not tolerated on- OR off-list – so don’t send your fellow list members unsolicited emails of any type!
Members may link to external websites, but only in order to illustrate an item they’re offering – for example, by linking to a photo or manufacturer description of the item. Links to members’ wishlists, gift registries, stores or businesses are prohibited.
Non-profits may link to their websites so that other members can verify their non-profit status.
6) Inappropriate behavior is not tolerated. Do not harass fellow list members for any reason. If you have a problem with a member or his/her post, contact the moderators off-list. Keep in mind that the moderators are unpaid volunteers – they do not “work” for Yahoo or Freecycle. On the contrary, running this list has actually cost them money, not to mention invaluable time. Treat them with respect – they are providing you with a FREE service! Rudeness and abuse will no longer be tolerated.
Kansas City Freecycle Network – List Rules (For For-profits/”Resellers”)
If you are an individual or company who sells used/refurbished merchandise, you are welcome to participate on KC Freecycle. However, you must explicitly state that you are a for-profit in all of your ads. That is, whether you’re posting a “wanted” or responding to an “offer”, it’s your responsibility to state up-front (without first being asked) that you plan on reselling the items you’ve obtained on KC Freecycle.
We consider “scrappers” a form of resellers – so if you plan on selling any items obtained on KC Freecycle ™ as scrap metal, you must inform the offeror when placing a “wanted” or responding to an “offer”.
You must also follow the above Rules, including the limit on “wanteds”.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Kansas City Freecycle Network – List Rules (For Non-profits/Charities)

If you represent a non-profit/charity, we would love to have you participate on KC Freecycle.

Non-profits/charities must follow the above Rules, including the limit on “wanteds.” As requests for volunteers fall into the category of services or intangibles, such wanteds are not allowed on KC Freecycle.

Non-profits may link to their websites so that other members can verify their non-profit status.

Non-profits are also allowed to offer receipts/letters for all donations received – we do not consider this a “trade”.

Note: while we used to maintain a searchable “Charity Database” at http://www.kcfreecycle.org/charity/, the service was discontinued on 5/14/07. We simply did not have the time or resources to keep the listings current. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you have any questions or comments, you can visit our web page at www.kcfreecycle.org or e-mail the moderators at kcfreecycle-owner [at] yahoogroups [dot] com. Due to the high volume of email we receive, we’re no longer able to respond to each one individually. However, we will take all comments into consideration and will attempt to answer questions in a prompt manner.
