FAQ
How does KC Freecycle™ work?
Signing up for the KC Freecycle™ message board is simple! Here’s how it works:
1. In order to use Yahoo Groups, you must first be a registered member of Yahoo. If you don’t already have a User ID at Yahoo, you can get one (along with a free e-mail address) by clicking here.
2. After filling out the form, you can use your new ID and e-mail address to join groups at Yahoo. You can search or browse existing groups by clicking on: groups.yahoo.com/
Or, you can go directly to the KC Freecycle™ group page at: groups.yahoo.com/group/kcfreecycle/
To join, simply click on “Join This Group”, or go to: groups.yahoo.com/group/kcfreecycle/join
You will need to sign in with your Yahoo ID and password in order to join (and participate in) any Yahoo Groups, including KC Freecycle™
3. KC Freecycle™ is a “closed” list, meaning that all new members must be approved by the moderators. Once you request membership, Yahoo will automatically send you an application to the email address you requested membership with. Please answer the questions in this application and either click on “reply”, or forward the completed application to kcfreecycle-owner [at] yahoogroups [dot] com. Once we’ve had a chance to review your answers (usually within 24 hours), we’ll let you know whether you are eligible to join the list (i.e., whether you live in our service area or not).
4. Once your membership has been approved, you should receive a welcome message via e-mail (sent to the e-mail address that you signed up with), as well as copies of the List Rules and Netiquette. Please take a moment to read through these before participating on the board.
Copies of each can be found on our web site:
List Rules - www.kcfreecycle.org/rules/
Netiquette - www.kcfreecycle.org/netiquette/
Or in the group’s “Files” section: groups.yahoo.com/group/kcfreecycle/files/
If you have any questions about the List Rules or Netiquette, please contact the KCFreecycle™ moderators.
The welcome message will explain how to send messages to the groups, and how to change your membership options if needed. Additional information about using the features at Yahoo Groups can be found at: help.yahoo.com/help/groups/
What is “Freecycle™”, anyway?!
“Free” + “Recycle” = “Freecycle™”
Freecycle is a way of “recycling” your old trash by giving it away. Reusing and recycling items in this manner keeps them out of the landfill and promotes an environmentally responsible lifestyle.
The first Freecycle™ group (that we know of) was established in Tucson, Arizona by the non-profit “Downtown Don’t Waste It”. The Yahoo Group KC Freecycle™ is inspired by and modeled after the Tucson Freecycle™ Network.
The Tucson Freecycle™ Network’s group page can be found at: groups.yahoo.com/group/freecycle/
The Tucson group has sparked a worldwide Freecycle™ “revolution”, and new groups are being established weekly.
