Finally, I’ve noticed a few offers of unwanted dog and cat food on the Kansas City Freecycle list in the past week or two. Should you find yourself with excess food (or other dog and cat supplies), please consider donating it to SNKC’s food bank. My husband dropped off a few bags of dog food last week, and reported back that the bank is running dangerously low on food. We are seeking URBAN MINERS to find unused and forgotten household items and donate them to SNKC for the garage sale. Items may be dropped off at the clinic during normal business hours (M-F, 8-5 and S, 9-12) or you may contact Tamara via email at tamara@snkc.net to make arrangements. We will be accepting donations through July 17th.

We are also interested in volunteers who are garage sale gurus and can help us make this a HUGE success. Volunteers will be needed to help sort, price and display items and man the sale. Again, contact tamara@snkc.net for more info or to sign up today!

A member asked me to pass along the following information re: “Large Item Recirculation Day” in Leawood, Kansas, this Saturday, June 5th.

Over on Leawood’s website (www.leawood.org/parks/), the city describes the event thusly:

“Leawood homes located from Somerset to 95th St, between State Line and Mission Roads. Here’s an opportunity to let that couch or chair find a new home and avoid ending up in a land fill.”

Additional information is available at www.leawood.org/parks/pdf/recirculation.pdf, but for those who cannot view the .pdf file, here are the details.

Pickup will be throughout the day on Saturday, June 5th. The town of Leawood kindly asks that you NOT put out any items prior to Friday, June 4th.

Allowable items include: couches, chairs, love seats, tables, end tables, refrigerators, stoves, washers/dryers, dishwashers, vacuum cleaners, beds, bed frames, stereos, electronics, microwaves, TVs & PCs.

Items NOT included in this pickup: liquids, glass, hazardous waste, paint, pesticides, chemicals, oils, clothes, car batteries, tires, automotive parts, construction materials, concrete, dirt, old lumber, basketball poles, shingles & fencing.

(To arrange for disposal of these items, please call Johnson County Hazardous Waste at 913.715.6900. Note: Any non-allowed items placed curbside will not be picked up and will be subject to fines per code
violation.)

When I saw Chance’s silly smiley face in Wayside Waifs’ latest newsletter, I knew immediately that he’d be this week’s featured adoptable! Chance is an adult male Labrador/Retriever mix who has been through quite a lot in his relatively short six years. Here’s Wayside Waifs with the details:

Meet Chance! This senior Retriever mix is one of the coolest dogs you’ll ever meet. He came into Wayside when his owner feared for his safety and wanted him to find a loving home of his own.

The reason his previous owner worried about his safety is that Chance has one tiny bad habit. He chases cars. Since his owner didn’t have a fence, Chance put his life at risk everytime he would chase cars. In fact, Chance was run over twice by a vehicle, but this tough guy lived to tell the tale. This guy is more like a cat with his nine lives.

Chance is one cool dog. He loves pretty much everybody he meets. He loves other dogs, and we were even told that he was affectionate and loving with the cats he lived with. In fact the cat in the house would curl up with Chance, and they would nap together. He has lived with children and done well. Of course, he prefers children that are respectful of him and are always kind to him. Chance’s previous owner said he was a wonderful dog. When his mom was sick in bed, he would slowly creep into bed with her. He would like lengthwise in the bed and put his arm over his owner as if he was bear hugging her!!! What a sweetie pie!

We were also told that Chance is boat savvy, and he loves to swim. His previous owner took him on their boat whenever they could, and Chance would swim until his heart was content. Then he would climb back in the boat when he had enough! His previous owners said their favorite characteristics about him was what a playful, cuddley, fisherman he is, and that he is a distinguished old man.

Chance is housetrained, and he knows “sit,” “stay,” “down,” and “shake.” He also knows the term “babies” for his toys and go “night-night.” Chance was a well loved dog, and he will make a special family very happy! Is that family yours? Come see for yourself!

I’m a little strapped for time this week, so I decided to borrow one of Wayside Waifs’ “Waifs of the Week” for this week’s Featured Adoptable post. Normally, Wayside Waifs highlights younger, more “adoptable” animals in its newsletter. This week, though, they (kinda sorta) broke with tradition and included a senior beagle named Montana (alongside Demi, a one-year-old Belgian Malinois Mix and Espresso, a ten-month-old kitten).

It appears that Wayside Waifs no longer relies on Petfinder as its primary adoption listing source; instead, its newsletter links to Petango (which is new to me!). Here’s Montana’s listing:

Meet Peter, a domestic black and white short hair cat living with food allergies:

Date of birth: 5/03

7/15/09: Peter is a handsome B&W cat with big round gold eyes and a shorthair coat. He’s a real sweet guy and he gets along well with other cats. He is 6 years old.

Peter has been at our shelter for a very long time. When we first met him, he’d been left at our doorstep in a box. His face was all scratched up and swollen and his ears looked raw. We determined that he had a food allergy and put him on a diet of Science Diet ZD formula. That cleared him up and he’s been fine ever since. He’ll need to stay on allergy food, and it can be purchased from your veterinarian or from our clinic. He can live with other cats as long as they are fed separately or the other cats eat ZD, too.

Peter has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for FIV and feline leukemia. We’d love to find this sweet guy a good home soon.

Peter’s currently staying with the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City – but methinks he’d be much happier at home with you!

Be close to the action this year and reserve a table of eight for only $500. Tickets include complimentary hors d’eouvres and a cash bar. Free parking is available in Lot B, conveniently located next to Hale Arena.

Artwork includes a wide variety of mediums including: oil, watercolor, pen and ink paintings, metal artwork, sculpture, plush art and more. In this year’s live auction, attendees can bid on “Golfing Birds” metal artwork signed by golfing great Tom Watson. Golfing Birds also includes a signed golf ball by Watson.

Greetings!

SNKC has an incredible opportunity for our volunteers to help assist needy pets. We are seeking 25-30 volunteers to help with this special SNKC Pet Outreach Program event and hope you can join us for a day of rewarding work in our community.

Training will be provided for all volunteers who participate. Immediately following training, volunteers will work in groups with one appointed lead Outreach Member.

Volunteers will canvass assigned areas to help distribute our “spay and neuter kits”, which include educational material regarding our services as well as information on responsible pet ownership. A staff member will work with each group to sign up pet owners for spay and neuter appointments.

Resources will be available for pet owners who demonstrate financial need and are cooperative in helping improve the quality of life for their pet, including spaying and neutering.
