——————————

For our final adoptable of the week, I’ve decided to feature another less traditional animal companion, as horses and goats and pigs (oh my!) are usually harder to find in the Midwest – and Second Chance Pet Adoptions in Kansas City, Missouri, just so happens to have a pony available for adoption at this very moment!

Meet Princess Cinderella – a Shetland pony.

null

Princess Cinderella
Pony
Small | Adult | Female | Horse

Princess Cinderella is a 7 yr old Shetland pony. She is a very sweet girl, But just needs a little one to ride her. Her little girl just moved up to horses and can no longer show her. She has been shown in lead line and done well. She is very gentle around children and easy to groom and clip . She stands great for the farrier. Loads and hauls well in the trailer. We have been working on driving her. She seems eager to learn. She does have diabetes. Which is very manageable. Really you wouldn’t know she had anything wrong when kept on her feeding schedule. So we are looking for someone that will keep her on Safe choice feed and hay that isn’t to rich in protein. The grass is to rich for her so she needs to be kept in a dry lot and only out to eat grass for a short period each day. Her adoption fee is $400.00 she is current on her spring shots and has a current coggins. Please email petsaverdc [at] aol.com if you are interested.

Poor Cinderella – discarded like an old baseball mitt once she no longer “fits” her “owner.” That doesn’t sound like any way to treat a Princess, does it!? Let’s help this dear lady find her Prince Charming, mkay? Spread the word, freecyclers – perhaps one of your friends or acquaintances is in possession of Princess Cinderella’s glass slipper?

My cheesy fairy tale allusions, they will not stop until Cinderella has been adopted. This is my vow to you.

Featured Adoptables: Billy the Kid (literally!)

Billy the Kid. Literally: Billy is a goat! Okay, almost literally; Billy is an adult goat. Tomato, tomahto. Photos courtesy S.T.A.F.F.
——————————

As with yesterday’s uber-adorable Cinnamon and Ghost, today’s featured adoptable is currently being cared for by S.T.A.F.F. in Laurie, Missouri. (In fact, it was Billy I was searching for when I stumbled upon the listing for Cinnamon and Ghost! But I digress.)

Billy is – how should I say this? – a less traditional companion animal; he’s a goat, you see! Billy is the closest goat to Kansas City who is current available for adoption, in point o’ facts. Farmed animals just aren’t very popular companions ’round these parts, I guess. But again, I digress.

Here’s what S.T.A.F.F. has to say about lil’ Billy boy:

Billy the Kid
Goat
Medium | Adult | Male | Barnyard | Pet ID: S-4516

Billy the Kid is approximately 2 years old. He has been under the care of STAFF since 4/5/10. Call STAFF at 573-374-2629 for more information.

Not very detailed, I’m afraid, but if you’re searching for a goat to adopt, Billy may be your guy. Plus, just look at his cute lil’ body!:

My heart, it’s melting! Goats are the ship.

Featured Adoptables: Cinnamon and Ghost, Friends and Survivors

——————————

Owing to a rather stressful few weeks, I’ve neglected to update the Featured Adoptables on these here pages since (*cough*) late April. To atone for my absent-mindedness, I bring you triple (well, quadruple) the cute, furry, awesome adoptable-ness this week. That’s right; I’ll be here through Thursday, folks!

Let’s kick things off with Cinnamon and Ghost, a bonded, must-be-adopted-together-no-ifs-ands-or-buts, pair of ex-stray dogs from Laurie, Missouri. Yes, I know; Laurie is a good 2 1/2 hour drive from KCMO proper – but when I read Cinnamon and Ghost’s sad story, I just had to share. I hope y’all will agree, and these poor kiddos will be in their forever home this time next week. After a two-year wait, they sure deserve it!

First up is the dogs’ joint listing on S.T.A.F.F.’s home page (S.T.A.F.F. = Society for Treatment of Abandoned and Fractured Friends):

These two wonderful dogs were abandoned by their owner who drove both dogs to an old dirt road and left them there, they fought for survival together, they took care of each other, they became the best of best friends. When they were finally brought to STAFF by a caring soul we could see that they needed each other. Both of them have lived together in the same kennel for the past 2 years because they just can’t tolerate being apart. They are wonderful dogs and they have been in the shelter for over 2 YEARS! We have considered several times adopting them out separately but we just cannot bring ourselves to tear them apart

This is their prayer:

“Dear God, Are you still there? Do you remember us? You guided us to STAFF 2 years ago when we were abandoned and lost. We know people say you have a purpose for most everything. We both became best of friends when we were on our journey of abandonment and we just cannot be without each other now. We think our friendship must be part of your plan. We have waited so long. Can you help us now? We have seen you help so many of our friends here at STAFF and we are hoping it is our turn soon. We hope you see us being good so you will bring us a family. Please help us God. Please… Amen.”

Do you or someone you know have room in their home and heart for these wonderful dogs? Two years in a shelter is so very sad…

Please give us a call at (573) 374-2629.

And here is each dog’s individual listing on Petfinder:

null

Cinnamon
Shar Pei [Mix]
Medium | Adult | Female | Dog | Pet ID: S-3458

Cinnamon is a very sweet dog. She was found running on the highway with her friend Ghost. No owner has been found. Her estimated DOB is Jan. 2006. Cinnamon has been at STAFF since 1/19/08. Please call STAFF at 573-374-2629 for more information.

Cinnamon is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

null

Ghost
Samoyed [Mix]
Large | Adult | Male | Dog | Pet ID: S-3459

Ghost is a very nice dog. He was found running on the highway with his friend Cinnamon. Ghost’s estimated DOB is Jan. 2006. He has been at STAFF since 1/19/08. Please call STAFF at 573-374-2629 for more information.

Ghost is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

If you can help this adorable little couple out, please get in touch with S.T.A.F.F. ASAP – or else I might just beat you to the punch! (Kidding! I wish I could adopt them, but I already have a full house over here.)

Even if you can’t adopt Cinnamon and Ghost, please spread the word; let your friends, family and contacts know about their plight. Two (out of four) years is much, much too long to spend waiting, waiting, waiting…waiting to go home. Worrying that it will be solo.

Featured Adoptables: Bandit & Mystery the Ferrets

Update, 6/9/10: W00t! Bandit and Mystery have been adopted!

null

——————————

Bandit and Mystery are so terribly cute that I couldn’t choose between the two. Hence, this week I’ve two Featured Adoptables for you (- which is quickly becoming par for the course, I might add. So many animals, so few homes. But lest I digress towards the depressing…)

So allow me to introduce you to Bandit and Mystery, a pair of furry ferret friends from Harley’s Angels Pet Rescue in Louisburg, Kansas.

Bandit is all white with a little bit of silver. He is very friendly and likes to sniff ears. He is a great pet. His adoption fee is $50. Please email us at harleysangelspetrescue [at] gmail.com for more info or pics.

Mystery is a beautiful sable girl. She is super super sweet. She is fine with other ferrets and likes cats and dogs. Her adoption fee is $50. Please email us at harleysangelspetrescue [at] gmail.com for more info and pics.

While Harley’s Angels doesn’t specify whether the two are a bonded pair and must be adopted together, if ferrets are your companions of choice, why not consider adopting both Bandit and Mystery, as they evidently get on well together?

Of course, if ferrets are not your “thing,” Harley’s Angels also has a number of dogs and cats in need of forever homes, too!

Featured Adoptables: Oreo the Cat

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Update, 6/9/10: Oreo’s listing is no longer available on Petfinder.

null

——————————

Because I totally flaked out and forgot about the Featured Adoptables column last week, I’m doubling up with another animal today! Like Smores, Oreo also hails from Half Way Home Pet Adoptions in Raytown, Missouri. Unlike Ms. Smores, Oreo is a dude – and a cat.

Though I didn’t mean to continue on with the food-themed names, Oreo’s story touched my heart; this little guy deserves a loving home to make up for the loss of his family, both human and feline.

Gentle Oreo came to us with a companion of his, Suzie Q. He was surrendered because of allergies in the family. This sweet boy might be a bit older than some of the cats we have, but his gentle nature is his strong suit. Won’t you give this older guy a chance at a loving home once again? Come see Oreo today.

On the glass is half empty/half full side, it appears that Suzie Q has already been adopted – without poor Oreo! (I cannot for the life of me find her listing on Petfinder.) If you can give dear Oreo a loving home – perhaps with a new feline friend – in which to spend the rest of his days, get in touch with Half Way Home today. But. You might still ask Half Way Home what became of Oreo’s sister, as the group doesn’t list all of its available animals on Petfinder. Perhaps Suzie Q is still at the shelter, too.

And remember: Half Way Home will be at The Kansas City Pet Expo this Saturday and Sunday, April 17th and 18th, along with a number of other local animal rescue groups, as well as KC area businesses that cater to nonhuman animals and their guardians. A full list of exhibitors is available here.

Featured Adoptables: Smores the Chocolate Lab Mix

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Update, 6/9/10: Smores’ listing is no longer available on Petfinder.

——————————

Summer’s a-coming, and what better way to start the new season than with a little Smores? Smores the dog, that is!

Super fun-loving, outgoing, playful and energetic! Smores also has a very sweet and cuddly side. You get the best of both worlds with her. An active companion, always in a good mood and ready for a good time with the family, and a loving and affectionate sweetheart, eager to keep you company on the couch and relax with her loved ones….. What more could you ask for?

More pictures of Smores ->

UPDATE: Oh no! Smores has been at the shelter too long now and nobody sees her…. Shelter life is taking its toll on her, not to mention that keeping her longer only means that other dogs must give their life to make room. Unwanted animals arrive daily. We are full! We don’t have a choice… It’s not our fault and its certainly not the fault of a friendly dog like Smores…. Please come and help her…. She’s begging you…

New Pictures of Smores ->

Smores is currently staying with Half Way Home Pet Adoptions in Raytown, Missouri. Half Way Home functions as the municipal shelter for Kansas City, Missouri, and thus takes in a large number of animals – not all of whom they’re able to save. By adopting from this kill shelter, you are literally saving a life.

You can find out more about Half Way Home here, visit them at the The Kansas City Pet Expo this weekend, April 17th and 18th, and view all the adoptable animals currently listed on Petfinder by Half Way Home here. Not all of their adoptable animals are available for viewing on Petfinder, so please visit the shelter to meet all of the animals. And of course, you can find Smores’s Petfinder listing here.

Featured Adoptables: Miss Quincy the Cat

Update, 6/9/10: Quincy has been adopted!

null

——————————

I’m on my way to a dentist appointment this morning (and expect to be somewhat out of it when I return), so we’ll need to make this quick! Meet Miss Quincy, a gorgeous little kitty in need of a home. While she no doubt adores her rescuers at Greycat Adoptions (located in Kansas City, MO), it’s time for this girl to find a place of her own!

Writes Greycat,

Quincy is a beautiful young girl. She is quiet and gentle, we think she would be good with quiet children older than toddlers. She doesn’t really like other cats but tries to stay out of their way instead of fussing with them. She was abandoned in a neighborhood and had been outside for awhile. She came right to us when we spoke to her. She was very thin and very hungry. She has no desire to go back outside it was very very cold when she came inside. We think she was born in April of 2009.

Can you help this pretty lady? If so, further details are available on her Petfinder listing. Ciao!

Featured Adoptables: Sport the Senior Arabian Horse

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

null

——————————

This week’s featured adoptable hails not from Kansas or Missouri, but from Iowa. Sport – a handsome senior Arabian horse – is currently staying with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, which is about a three hour drive north of KCMO.

Why so far, you ask? Well, I like to highlight a less traditional adoptable animal every now and again; and while some species, such as rats and mice (i.e., “pocket pets”), are less commonly available for adoption than cats and dogs, they’re still somewhat easy to find in the Kansas City area. “Farm” animals and “livestock” such as horses, goats, cows, and pigs, not so much. As these animals are less likely to be kept as “pets,” they’re also less likely to pass through the shelter/animal rescue system.*

Previously, I’ve featured adoptable animals from the HSMO’s Longmeadow Rescue Ranch, as well as a handful of “farmed” animals available for adoption through smaller rescue groups. This week, I thought I might highlight a shelter that, though it may be located out of state, is still a rather short distance to drive if you’ve your heart set on adopting a new hoofed friend! Enter: the Animal Rescue League of Iowa. And Sport, of course!

Location: ARL Main
Name: Sport
Ticket Number: 7075329
Reference ID: 12129
Pet Type: Livestock
Date Available: 8/28/2009
Age: 32 Years
Gender: Gelding
Breed: Horse, Arabian
Special Needs: None
Reason for Arrival: Needs new environment
How Animal Arrived: Owner surrender

Sport is a handsome senior who is looking for a home in which to spend his retirement. He is about 32 years old and a gelding. He is available at ARL Main and can be seen by appointment. If you are interested in meeting him or learning more about him, please contact Judy at jhand [at] arl-iowa.org or (515) 473-9112.

Visit www.arl-iowa.org to learn more about the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and find a more extensive list of the shelter’s adoptable animals.

You can learn more about Sport through his listings on Petfinder and ARL-Iowa.

ARL-Iowa is also home to two other adoptable horses, Marquis and Silver Bullet, as well as a motley crew of goats, donkeys and pot bellied pigs.

* Speaking of, did you know that Rep. Jim Viebrock (R-Republic) has introduced a measure to the Missouri House of Representatives that would legalize the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the state of MO? To find out more about H.B. 1747 – and ask the Missouri House to reject the measure – please see the following action alert: Show Me Missouri – Show Me Horse Slaughter?.

Featured Adoptables: Long John Silver, the three-legged pit bull beauty.

——————————

I am totally in love with this week’s featured adoptable. I know, I know; I express some variation of this sentiment every week, and every week I mean it. But today I’m 150% for serious. I mean, just look at this pretty pittie mug!

null

Long John Silver – so named because he’s missing his left hind leg – is a young (under a year old, though you’d never know it from his already-formidable size!), lilac and white male pit bull who found his way to Missouri PitBull Rescue after a brief stint in the local pound. MPR fixed the little guy up, gave him a foster home in which to recover, and is now trying to find LJS a forever home. Perhaps that’s….you?

Here are Long John Silver’s stats, all pulled from his listing on www.mprgroup.net (see: www.mprgroup.net/dogs/longjohnsilver.html).

Featured Adoptables: Junior, a Very Special Orange Tabby

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Update, 6/9/10: Junior’s listing is no longer available on Petfinder.

null

——————————

Poor Junior! As a homeless kitten, he was cared for and eventually adopted by a human couple…who later asked a vet (that would be the good folks at FMA Animal Hospital, I presume?) to euthanize the lil’ guy – just because he caught the feline leukemia virus during his time living on the streets! While FeLV is not curable, it is treatable, and FeLV+ cats can live long and enjoyable lives. However, to prevent the transmission of FeLV, it’s best not to house FeLV+ cats with those who do not have the virus. Hence, Junior will do best as an only cat, or in a multi-FeLV+ cat household. But, lest I get ahead of myself, here’s FMA Animal Hospital with the details:

Hello! My name is Junior and I am approx. 18 months old. I was a stray in a neighborhood for a few months until a nice couple began feeding me and earned my trust. I was brought inside when it got cold out and was told I had a forever home with them. When it was time for my first doctor visit for vaccines and neutering I tested positive for the FIV virus. At first the couple was ok with it and even started vaccinating their other kitty against it. For some reason the family changed their minds and ordered that I be euthanized. Thank heavens for my friends at FMA- they decided I deserved a good home and they are going to let me stay with them until a new mommy or daddy- or both- can be found for me. They say I am way to nice of a cat to be discarded like trash just because I am “SPECIAL.” If you are willing to love a boy like me please give Andrea a call and she will set a time to come for a visit. Adoption fee $50.00

If you’d like to give this special guy a second (third?!) chance at life, get in touch with the FMA Animal Hospital today!

Oh, and do visit Junior’s Petfinder listing, where you can see a video of the cutie pie playing with a shiny new toy from FMA! Cat bless the internets, yes?
