This week’s featured adoptable(s) is rather unusual; while I oftentimes highlight bonded pairs of animals who need to be rehomed together, and occasionally feature large groups of animals (mice, usually) who are in need of separate homes, I’ve yet to see four animals who must all be adopted together. But this is exactly the case with Dex, Gus, Maia and Jessi, a group of bonded ferrets who are seeking a forever home, together.

This is a friendly, energetic group of ferrets. Since they are bonded, we would prefer to send them to a forever home as a group, Dexter (1 1/2 yrs), Gus (1 1/2 yrs), and Maia (4 yrs, F) as adoptions and Jessie (4 1/2 yrs, F) as a foster. All like to be held and carried around, especially the girls. Gus and Dexter are VERY playful with you, each other and dogs. Though they don’t bite, they may use their teeth when playing. They are, however dominant males and don’t get along well with other males. They use litter boxes in their cage and usually, not always, use puppy pads when out & about.

After being subjected to pointless experiments and confined their entire lives in individual plastic tubs where they had no contact with others, these rats were slated to be killed – but, if The Humane League can find homes for all of these rats, the university is willing to turn them over to us.

Please consider opening your home to a pair (or more) of these sweet, friendly, and easy to care for creatures. All are white albino males that get along well with others. Of the 20 million animals experimented on each year in the U.S., only a few hundred are freed to live the rest of their days in peace. This week’s featured adoptable hails from No More Homeless Pets KC, which is located in Merriam, Kansas. At just eight months of age, Linus has already seen some tough times. This little guy has survived an upper respiratory infection (trumping his veterinarian’s prognosis), both eyes intact (whereas, at one point, Linus’s vet had considered removing the left eye, as badly infected as it was), thankyouverymuch. On top of all this, dear Linus suffered the loss of his family, who could not afford to pay for his medical care. Methinks this lil’ guy deserves some shiny happy news for a change; if you agree, keep reading for details and please consider giving Linus the most precious gift of all – a loving, caring, forever home.

Linus came into a shelter when he was a tiny kitten with his eyes infected and matted shut. His owner could not afford to take him to a vet and the shelter was already full, but he was so tiny and cute that our rescue group took on the responsibility of his medical care. He had a horrible Upper Respiratory Infection (kitty cold), but was so young and little that the vets did not give him a very good chance of surviving. He was tough though! And he had a huge appetite – would eat and eat wet kitten food, even though he was barely old enough to have his baby teeth.

The URI had severely affected his eyes and he required a long course of antibiotics and eye ointment. He recovered from the URI, and continued to grow and grow! He’s a big boy – kinda chunky! He’s only approx 8 months old and already over 10 lbs. He’s turned into quite a beautiful cat with medium length orange & white hair that is very soft, like rabbit fur, and look at that beautiful tail! He’s full of personality and is very loving. He’s still young so he likes to play with the other cats in foster care, but will sit in your lap and purrrr.

He does have some lasting damage to his left eye in that it looks a little smaller than the right eye, and tends to tear up more. The cornea is clear so the vet thinks his vision out if it is just fine. The vet had considered taking the eye out when he was younger since it had been so badly infected, and it’s been a battle, but the eye was saved . He’s such a great cat it was all worth it! Robin Craft of Black & Orange Cat Foundation describes Fruit Bat’s rescue and medical needs:

Fruit Bat was found lying in the median of a very busy road. No one slowed down to check on the little dog as she cowered in pain, back legs unable to move, on the hot pavement. Cars whizzed by for twelve hours before a good samaritan from Colony Cats stopped to investigate and found the tiny chihuahua. The kind hearted volunteer quickly rushed Fruit Bat to Noah’s Ark Vet Hospital in Dublin, where Dr. Kim West proceeded to do a physical exam.

Fruit Bat’s back ankles were both fractured, causing the little dog’s immobility. Other than that, however, the chihuahua with the big eyes and perpetual smile, was in good shape. Dr. West discovered that Fruit Bat was only two years old and had not been spayed. On further investigation, it also became clear that Fruit Bat had an old fracture to the bone of her front leg, a fracture which had healed without medical care. Wherever this sweet girl came from, it was not the best place.

Because the volunteer who found Fruit Bat was with Colony Cats, the group was more than willing to help the little girl. Only there was one problem. A problem that often occurs in rescue–the little problem of money. Fruit Bat’s surgeries to repair her broken ankle bones must be done at Ohio State–Dr. West cannot do that herself. And so, the cost for Fruit Bat to walk again is between $1500-2000 and Colony Cats just cannot afford to pay that much.

Dr. West took it upon herself to raise the money for Fruit Bat’s surgeries and she asked us if we would help. Dr. West is also going to act as Fruit Bat’s foster after the surgeries, taking care of her dressings and helping her with rehabilitative therapy.

Without the necessary surgery, Fruit Bat will not be able to walk again; in fact, she may have to be euthanized. Please, please consider making a donation to help fund Fruit Bat’s surgery – no matter how small – and spread the word, too. Finally, once she’s recovered from surgery, Fruit Bat will need a forever home. She’s currently located in Ohio, which is most likely too far a drive for most Kansas Citians. However, if you know of a friend, family member, acquaintance or even a friend-of-a-friend in the area who is looking for a small, friendly dog to adopt, please tell them about little Fruit Bat. According to her foster family, she’s good with both dogs and cats, and is most definitely a people per(fur?)son.

And yes, for the record, I do find bats (including fruit bats) unbearably adorable. Viva la Fruit Bat!

Update, 6/12/10: Here’s a post-op update on Fruit Bat, complete with photos of the dear (shaven) girl and her new casts! Her rescuers are still trying to raise money to help pay for her care, so please donate what/if you can.

When I saw Chance’s silly smiley face in Wayside Waifs’ latest newsletter, I knew immediately that he’d be this week’s featured adoptable! Chance is an adult male Labrador/Retriever mix who has been through quite a lot in his relatively short six years. Here’s Wayside Waifs with the details:

Meet Chance! This senior Retriever mix is one of the coolest dogs you’ll ever meet. He came into Wayside when his owner feared for his safety and wanted him to find a loving home of his own.

The reason his previous owner worried about his safety is that Chance has one tiny bad habit. He chases cars. Since his owner didn’t have a fence, Chance put his life at risk everytime he would chase cars. In fact, Chance was run over twice by a vehicle, but this tough guy lived to tell the tale. This guy is more like a cat with his nine lives.

Chance is one cool dog. He loves pretty much everybody he meets. He loves other dogs, and we were even told that he was affectionate and loving with the cats he lived with. In fact the cat in the house would curl up with Chance, and they would nap together. He has lived with children and done well. Of course, he prefers children that are respectful of him and are always kind to him. Chance’s previous owner said he was a wonderful dog. When his mom was sick in bed, he would slowly creep into bed with her. He would like lengthwise in the bed and put his arm over his owner as if he was bear hugging her!!! What a sweetie pie!

We were also told that Chance is boat savvy, and he loves to swim. His previous owner took him on their boat whenever they could, and Chance would swim until his heart was content. Then he would climb back in the boat when he had enough! His previous owners said their favorite characteristics about him was what a playful, cuddley, fisherman he is, and that he is a distinguished old man.

Chance is housetrained, and he knows “sit,” “stay,” “down,” and “shake.” He also knows the term “babies” for his toys and go “night-night.” Chance was a well loved dog, and he will make a special family very happy! Is that family yours? Come see for yourself!

This week’s featured adoptable is a tank. Errr, Yeti. Errr, Abominable Snowman. Retriever Mix? All of the above?

Whichever breed/species Sherman hails from, one thing is certain: he’s five stones+ of pure bliss. Or is that boulders? Meh, who cares. He’s a big hunk of adorable, and that’s all you need to know!

Here’s what the good folks at Animal Haven to say about ol’ Sherman:

Sherman is a BIG boy (he may have been named after the tank!). He is a happy-go-lucky fellow who loves to meet new people. His needs are simple: food & water, a nice cozy bed, an outdoor spot to potty, and a family who loves him. He does well with dogs and cats, as long as he has a chance to get to know them. His favorite toy is a chew bone, so be sure to have plenty of those handy. This guy is house trained and will do great with just about any family (though any kids in the house should be at least 8 years old). Sherman is ready to move into his new lifelong caring home, so come meet him today!

By the way, I’ve been wanting to say a little something about the recent earthquake in Haiti, but…words escape me. Really, there’s not much to say. Instead, I encourage you to give what you can to help the millions of people who have seen their homes destroyed, their families torn apart, and their lives uprooted by this natural disaster (which was/is being exacerbated by centuries of oppression and exploitation resulting in crippling poverty).

Finally, the many nonhuman inhabitants of Haiti and the Dominican Republic will need aid in the upcoming weeks, months and years as well. While not much has yet been written of anticipated future animal rescue efforts, you can find an excellent summery here. A number of animal welfare groups have joined together to form the Animal Relief Coalition for Haiti (ARCH). Spearheaded by The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and The World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), at the time of this writing, the following animal advocacy groups have joined ARCH: American Humane Association (AHA), American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), Best Friends Animal Society, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Humane Society International (HSI), In Defense of Animals (IDA), Kinship Circle, and the United Animal Nations (UAN).

Of course, I encourage you to research any and all organizations before making a donation; check that is legit, will use your money wisely, and is consistent with your beliefs. A few good resources in this regard are Charity Navigator, the American Institute of Philanthropy, and the Better Business Bureau. Be wary of email and telephone solicitations.

Sorry for the late posting of this week’s adoptable animal, folks. Wednesday totally got away from me this week. (Seriously, I’ve no idea where it went. Lemme know if you happen to spot it, mkay?)

Anyway, on to Bert & Berta, two sweet little siblings in need of a forever home – together, of course. The pair is currently staying at the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City (HSGKC), which writes,

Date of birth: 4/26/05

8/26/09: Bert & Berta are litter mates and they would like to find a home together. Bert is a handsome brown tabby and his sister Berta is a pretty Tortoiseshell. They both have beautiful coats. They are 4 years old.

Bert & Berta came to us as kittens. Someone had found them in a dumpster. They were emaciated and sick. Bert was covered with abscesses and appeared to have been bitten by a dog. They were both scared and shy.

They have come a long ways since then. They are both very healthy and they love to play with toys. They get along extremely well with other cats. Bert’s become quite friendly with people. Berta’s still a bit bashful but she’s very sweet.

We’ve posted more photos of them on Petfinder under each of their names.

Both have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for FIV and feline leukemia. They’ve been with us for a very long time and we’d like to find them a home where they can stay together.

Meet Peter, a domestic black and white short hair cat living with food allergies:

Date of birth: 5/03

7/15/09: Peter is a handsome B&W cat with big round gold eyes and a shorthair coat. He’s a real sweet guy and he gets along well with other cats. He is 6 years old.

Peter has been at our shelter for a very long time. When we first met him, he’d been left at our doorstep in a box. His face was all scratched up and swollen and his ears looked raw. We determined that he had a food allergy and put him on a diet of Science Diet ZD formula. That cleared him up and he’s been fine ever since. He’ll need to stay on allergy food, and it can be purchased from your veterinarian or from our clinic. He can live with other cats as long as they are fed separately or the other cats eat ZD, too.

Peter has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for FIV and feline leukemia. We’d love to find this sweet guy a good home soon.

Peter’s currently staying with the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City – but methinks he’d be much happier at home with you!

VOLUNTEER in MAY with Spay & Neuter Kansas City

Greetings!

Spring is FINALLY here and so is our new location!! We are moving the 1st weekend of May to 1116 E. 59th, KCMO, 64110, and we could NOT be more excited and proud! If you are not able to volunteer in May, please watch for an email about our Open House! We hope to see you there! AND, DON’T FORGET TO VISIT US THIS WEEKEND AT THE PET EXPO at the American Royal!

Volunteers Needed for Rabies Clinics

WHEN:

May 9th, 9-Noon
May 16th, 9-Noon
May 30th, 9-Noon

Please note the new start time for the clinics is 9AM!!

ALSO:

May 9th- Pete and Mac’s Chip & Dip, Lenexa, three volunteers from 10-1. Need one volunteer to help the vet and 2 to help people fill out forms for Microchipping.

May 16th- Camp Bow Wow, Olathe, 2 volunteers to help distribute information and answer questions. This is a pet adoption event with many area agencies represented.

Volunteer Re/Orientation

Please schedule a time to join us for a volunteer orientation. Whether it’s your first time or 50th time volunteering, we have an orientation just for you. Think you couldn’t learn anymore about SNKC? Let us SURPRISE you!

Current volunteers: May 9th and 16th, Tour of our new facility and be “Re-Oriented” before the rabies clinic. We will start at 8AM with coffee, juice and donuts provided. OR, join us after work on May 20th from 6:00-7:00PM. Sodas and cookies will be provided.

New Volunteers: May 13th, 2:00-4:00PM OR May 20th 6:00-8:00PM. Lite snacks available at both dates.

Spay & Neuter Kansas City Special Outreach Pet

While Spay & Neuter Kansas City’s primary focus is spaying and neutering, we occasionally come across a pet in need. The story below is about Mowgli who was rescued by our group and will touch your heart. We hope that you or someone you know can help Mowgli find the new home he deserves.
Out of the Woods

Rescuing dogs isn’t always a quick and easy process. Sometimes, you have to work for a very long time to succeed. In my experience, though, the payoff is always worth it.

When we first found out about Mowgli earlier this year, we weren’t expecting it to take eight weeks to rescue him. He was spotted running along the road near our clinic on January 13th. We later found out that he had made a den for himself in a wooded area nearby, living on wildlife and whatever food people would throw to him.

When we attempted to call him the first time, a driver passing us on the road informed us that he had seen the dog being dumped there out of a pickup truck nearly two weeks earlier, and that he hadn’t been able to get a license plate number but had been feeding the dog periodically since then.

For the next two months, each of our staff members and several SNKC volunteers took turns walking to the woods to bring him food, calling for him and trying to reassure him that we were there to help him. After all that time, he still wouldn’t come within 20 feet of anyone. After trying every different kind of food we could think of and even a live trap, we came to the conclusion that we were going to have to try a different approach if we ever wanted to bring him in.

On March 19th, several staff members and volunteers trekked out to the woods to capture Mowgli. The group was able to surround him and slowly close in. Mowgli attempted to hide under some bushes nearby, but the group was able to gently lift him out. Although he didn’t protest the leash that was put around his neck, he allowed (required) the girls to carry him out of the woods and back to the car.

Over the past week, all of us at SNKC have grown to love this gentle, loving dog. He’s currently sitting behind me while I type this, relaxing on a comfy blanket and watching the activity here at the clinic.

Right now, Mowgli’s most immediate need is medical care. He has tested positive for heartworms and will be receiving treatment here at SNKC. If you would like to donate to help us cover the cost of his treatment, you can do so online via PayPal at our donation page.

We are also seeking a home for Mowgli, so if you are interested in fostering or adopting this sweet boy, please e-mail Gloria Harris for information.

The red x is where Mowgli called home for several months of sub zero temperatures, snow and rain. He always stayed in the area most likely waiting for his owners to return.

Mowgli will need to go to a home that is familiar with his breed (Pit Bull), willing to learn and that does not live in a city with a Pit Bull ban. He is gentle, very sweet natured but shy. If you are interested please contact Gloria Harris gloriah [at] snkc.net

Foster Homes Needed for Local Animal Groups

Many of our local animal welfare groups are seeing an increase of animals needing homes due to the economy. Many of these animals are coming from families who simply can no longer financially care for them and some have lost their homes and cannot take their pets with them. While SNKC is helping many of these families by providing cat/dog food to temporarily help them through some troubled times, many local shelters and rescue groups could use more foster homes. Contact your local animal shelter or rescue group and help by taking a pet into your home allowing these groups to continue helping additional pets in need.
