This week’s featured adoptable(s) is rather unusual; while I oftentimes highlight bonded pairs of animals who need to be rehomed together, and occasionally feature large groups of animals (mice, usually) who are in need of separate homes, I’ve yet to see four animals who must all be adopted together. But this is exactly the case with Dex, Gus, Maia and Jessi, a group of bonded ferrets who are seeking a forever home, together.

These furballs are currently being offered for adoption by the Kansas City Ferret Hotline Association and Shelter, who has this to say about the group:

This is a friendly, energetic group of ferrets. Since they are bonded, we would prefer to send them to a forever home as a group, Dexter (1 1/2 yrs), Gus (1 1/2 yrs), and Maia (4 yrs, F) as adoptions and Jessie (4 1/2 yrs, F) as a foster. All like to be held and carried around, especially the girls. Gus and Dexter are VERY playful with you, each other and dogs. Though they don’t bite, they may use their teeth when playing. They are, however dominant males and don’t get along well with other males. They use litter boxes in their cage and usually, not always, use puppy pads when out & about.

The Humane League was recently contacted by a local university about 44 laboratory rats who were used in a basic psychology class. After being subjected to pointless experiments and confined their entire lives in individual plastic tubs where they had no contact with others, these rats were slated to be killed – but, if The Humane League can find homes for all of these rats, the university is willing to turn them over to us.

Please consider opening your home to a pair (or more) of these sweet, friendly, and easy to care for creatures. All are white albino males that get along well with others. Of the 20 million animals experimented on each year in the U.S., only a few hundred are freed to live the rest of their days in peace. Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.

We do this for several reasons:

- To highlight the plight of abused, neglected and/or homeless non-human animals in the Kansas City (and surrounding) area.

- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal companion.

- To encourage members to adopt a furry, feathered or scaled friend.

- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.

- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
