I am totally in love with this week’s featured adoptable. I know, I know; I express some variation of this sentiment every week, and every week I mean it. But today I’m 150% for serious. I mean, just look at this pretty pittie mug!

Long John Silver – so named because he’s missing his left hind leg – is a young (under a year old, though you’d never know it from his already-formidable size!), lilac and white male pit bull who found his way to Missouri PitBull Rescue after a brief stint in the local pound. MPR fixed the little guy up, gave him a foster home in which to recover, and is now trying to find LJS a forever home. Perhaps that’s….you?

Here are Long John Silver’s stats, all pulled from his listing on www.mprgroup.net (see: www.mprgroup.net/dogs/longjohnsilver.html).

ID Number: #14247
Breed: Pit Bull
Sex: Male (Neutered)
Age: ~ 1 year old
Weight: 60 to 70 Lbs
Color: Lilac & white
Good with dogs: Some
Good with cats: N/A
Nicknames: LJ, Silver
Special Needs: Amputated leg

We received a call from animal control pleading for us to help save a sweet boy with a horrible leg injury. After going to see the dog, we couldn’t turn our backs on him …

Despite his obvious pain, he was such a lover! He wanted nothing else but to climb on our lap, cuddle and give kisses. We were sold! We stepped up to take him in.

His leg was so horribly mangled, with bone exposed, that amputation was the only option to save his life. “Long John Silver” (or LJ) has recovered from his ordeal and doing awesome! He acts like he totaly forgot he ever had for legs…. He is so happy to have been given this precious chance.

Foster Situation: LJ was rescued when Animal Control was called to pick him up. He was found in very bad shape, with a hind leg that needed an emergency amputation. LJ never got upset while going through so much pain. He was just happy and grateful for the help. He was very skinny then and seemed dehydrated. He’s doing much better now and his amputation stitches came out last september. His leg has healed wonderfully, and he gets around like he was born with 3 legs. He was also neutered and never even seemed to notice :)

LJ lives in a foster home with 2 other dogs. LJ gets along with them but needs strong supervision. He would do well as an only pet, or with someone who understands Bully Breeds well.

He loves to play. Most of the time he spends trying to play “keep away” with the ball, but he sure loves to lay down and relax too. He is very affectionate and loving to his foster mom and dad.

LJ is one of the most loving dogs I’ve ever encountered. He is quite a little angel, but also has a goofball side to his personality. Because he only has 3 legs, he likes to lean up against his human friends while they pet him. Or LJ will put his huge head right in your lap to hint to you that he would like to be rubbed.

He still needs to rest his leg as it continues to heal, but every day he gets better. LJ has a big fenced in yard to run and play in, but he really prefers to stand right next to us most of the time, and will nudge your hand if you forget that he is there. LJ sleeps in his kennel at night and goes right in when he is told its time for bed.

Training: LJ is crate trained and completely housebroken. Very well behaved!

Personality: LJ is energetic but not hyper. He’s just veryhappy to be alive! He is very cuddly, wants to lay right in your lap. Has not been around kids much, but the neighbor kids pet him from the other side of the fence.

null

Best Attribute: LJ is a lover! He is affectionate and wants to be close. He is a very special dog, which is easy to see right away. He has been through so much, has been mistreated and unloved, yet is so forgiving and loving towards anyone that crosses his path.

We want LJ to find the best possible home because he is a remarkable dog, inside and out, with the personality to be a wonderful ambassador for the breed.

If LJ sounds like your ball of fur, drop MPR a line today.

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.

We do this for several reasons:

- To highlight the plight of abused, neglected and/or homeless non-human animals in the Kansas City (and surrounding) area.

- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal companion.

- To encourage members to adopt a furry, feathered or scaled friend.

- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.

- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
