Update, 9/22/10: Mr. Pom has been adopted, too.

Update, 2/10/10: Uh-oh. Mrs. Pom is no longer available for adoption, whereas Mr. Pom is.

I am so sorry, folks. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Thanksliving, I completely forgot to feature an adoptable animal last week! To make up for it, I bring you twice as much cuteness today.

I also neglected to mention that November was Adopt a Senior Pet Animal Companion Month. As I’ve mentioned before, senior animals are considered “less adoptable”: because of their age, older animals are less likely to be adopted, average longer stays in shelters and with rescue groups, and are more likely to be killed for lack of a home. Potential adopters may stereotype senior animals as less active and playful, or not worth the emotional and/or financial investment. This is a blatant example of ageism, plain and simple. Older animals have plenty to offer, and are just as deserving of a home as their younger counterparts.

In honor of Adopt a Senior “Pet” Month, I’ll be highlighting two senior dogs and two senior cats. First up, the canines. Meet Mr. and Mrs. Pom, an adorable pair of senior Pomeranians who hail from LL Dog Rescue.

Mr. & Mrs. Pom found themselves in a shelter when their human mother could no longer care for them. Mr Pom is 13 years old and Mrs Pom is 14 years old. These two are looking for a home to retire in that will accept them both.

Fence or enclosed patio required! Some Apartment dogs available. We will check your vet reference and fence. All our dogs are current on vaccs, HW neg and spayed or neutered.

The number of phone calls we receive is OVERWHELMING. For the quickest response, please E-Mail us at lldogrescue [at] yahoo.com. Please visit our upcoming Adopt-A-Pets at Petco, one block east of 75th & Metcalf in Overland Park .

On the following Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.:
October 3 & 17
November 7 & 21
December 5 & 19

And on the following Sundays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
October 25
November 22

See you there!

Perhaps you’re one half of an older couple, in search of a like-minded (and -speed) pair with which to share your golden years? If so, your search is over! Contact LL Dog Rescue, post-haste.

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.

We do this for several reasons:

- To highlight the plight of abused, neglected and/or homeless non-human animals in the Kansas City (and surrounding) area.

- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal companion.

- To encourage members to adopt a furry, feathered or scaled friend.

- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.

- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
