Featured Adoptables: Tatum the Miniature Horse

Every once in a while, I like to mix things up and highlight a less traditional animal companion: ferrets, rats, pigs, cows – anyone other than the usual cats and dogs (though they’re perfectly wonderful, too!). Problem is, there aren’t as many farmed animal rescue organizations in the BBQ capital of the world as there are in, say, California or New York.

So when searching for a rescued horse available for adoption this morning, the horse closest to Kansas City to pop up in my search results just so happened to be the daughter of a horse I featured here back in March. Meet Tatum, daughter of Sabrina.

Tatum is a pretty lil Bay colored Mini Filly that was foaled 4-29-07, foal of Sabrina and Dale. She is a sweet and easy natured lil gal that will make a very loving family companion. She will not be placed as an only horse, preferably we want to place her with one of our other mini’s that she has grown up with as family. She will need continued halter work and training.

Miniature horses are NOT meant to be ridden, they are TOO SMALL and they are NOT PONIES. However, they may be shown in many aspects of competition as well as trained to pull a cart for the Mini Enthusiast’s. They are actually very easy keepers.

Considered applicants must be knowledgeable of the breed and willing to put some work into training her or any of the other mini’s that arrived with with her. They must have adequate acreage and a barn-shed for them to be able to get out of bad weather. They do not do well as an ‘ONLY’, so we request that applicants have minimally another horse as a companion or be willing to adopt two.

Along with several of her kids, mom Sabrina was staying with Home for Disposable Pets/Sheltie Shack Rescue in Blue Rapids, KS – that is, until she was adopted, sometime around June. All of Tatum’s siblings have been adopted as well. Poor Tatum is the last of her family left; won’t you help her find her forever home?

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.

We do this for several reasons:

- To highlight the plight of abused, neglected and/or homeless non-human animals in the Kansas City (and surrounding) area.

- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal companion.

- To encourage members to adopt a furry, feathered or scaled friend.

- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.

- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
