Back in July, I featured Wendy, a hound mix who was rescued from a “life” spent at the end of a chain by the animal rescue group Dogs Deserve Better (scare quotes because a life in chains, isn’t much of a life at all).

Dogs Deserve Better

is a nonprofit organization dedicated to freeing the chained dog, and bringing our ‘best friend’ into the home and family.

Dogs Deserve Better, 2003 First Place Winner of the ASPCA/Chase Pet Protector Award, is a voice for chained and penned dogs, whose sadness speaks only through the eyes. As the days become years, many of these dogs sit, lay, eat, and defecate within the same 10-foot radius. Chained by the neck, they exist without respect, love, exercise, social interaction, and sometimes even basic nourishment. They live as prisoners, yet long to be pets.

Individual rescuers associated with the group operate all over the country, including right here in Kansas and Missouri. They work with the owners of chained and tethered dogs to free these animals from their prisons: by convincing “pet” owners that chaining is inhumane; by offering assistance in correcting any behavioral issues that may have contributed to the dog’s chaining in the first place; by erecting fencing in back yards so that a tether is unnecessary; and by assuming responsibility for unwanted animals, providing them medical care, fosters homes, and eventually rehoming them.

While Wendy has since found her forever home, I figured it was about high time I choose another DDB rescue dog to highlight here. Currently, there are eight DDB dogs living in foster homes in Columbia, MO – including Meg, a black pit bull terrier mix.

This sweet young girl was abandoned by her owner and was living homeless in the country. Some concerned neighbors watched over her and Dogs Deserve Better was notified. She is now safe in a foster home awaiting her “forever” home. Meg has a beautiful brindle coat with a little white on her chest. Very friendly, sweet, loving and playful. She is still very young so she will need some puppy training so she can be a well behaved member of the family. Meg loves to play in the swimming pool, is good on a leash and gets along great with other dogs. This sweet little girl did not deserve to be discarded to fend for herself and is looking for her own home where she can grow up safe, happy and healthy.

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.

We do this for several reasons:

- To highlight the plight of abused, neglected and/or homeless non-human animals in the Kansas City (and surrounding) area.

- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal companion.

- To encourage members to adopt a furry, feathered or scaled friend.

- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.

- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
