Featured Adoptables: Grunzzibutt the Pot-Bellied Pig
July 29th, 2009 11:18 am by Kelly G.Update, 2/10/10: Grunzzibutt has been adopted!

This week’s Featured Adoptable isn’t from Kansas City; in fact, he doesn’t even reside in Kansas or Missouri. Grunzzibutt lives in Omaha, Nebraska, where the rescue group No Pets Left Behind is trying to find him a new forever home.
Grunzin / Grunt in German / Grunzzibutt – Loves all small animals, don’t know about cats, we never had any. Loves children, mainly girls. He likes basketballs, and footballs. He likes to sleep with blankets and stuffed animals and a pillow. He has slept in my closet, in the winter. He likes to be in when it is real hot, and he will tell you when he wants out. He will also knock on the door to be let in.
Loves to cuddle. Uses a ramp to get up to the main floor. We do not ever feed him people food, only carrots, Romain lettuce, apple, cauliflower, and canned green beans. He mainly eats Active Adult Mazuri Pot belly Pig Feed. 1 1/2 cups 3 times a day, in the winter. Spring , Summer and Fall, we let him graze on the grass, if no chemicals, and we bring the food down to 1 cup 3 times a day.
I have never used a harness on him, he will walk with you, if you have a cane, and tap it on the ground, he will follow. He does get jolted by Lg loud vehicles. Grunzzi likes to be scratched and rubbed. He is a little leery of real Lg dogs, but he will take to them after awhile. He just needs to get to know that they will not hurt him, and he does come around.
No dog food ever, he gets sick. Plenty of fresh water everyday. We also put a hole in the pen, and we filled it up with water, he will lay in that. We tried swimming pools, but we have not found one low enough for him to get his short legs over. Otherwise he would get in. We also put lotion on him in the winter, every other week, for dry skin. He needs plenty of shade, or leanto’s. If his pen is Lg enough, he only urinates and has his BM in one corner of his pen, do not put his food anywhere close to his toilet area. He does not like that. We have used Bronco Equine Fly spay, it wks really good.
He needs more love and care than what we can give, My sister handed him over to us a year ago, so she can do her job out of town, But I can’t do this anymore, so, Sue stated it was ok to find him a home, as long we felt it was ok for him and he was going to be safe. We will miss him. We also, would like to be able to keep in contact with his New Family, to see how everything is goin. My daughter really got attached, but she is getting ready to go to college, and I can’t do this by myself. We hope you have fun and love him 4-ever.
BD- 08-19-2006 WT- 120 lbs. or close to it. Just keep him on his diet and he will not be overweight, and it won’t affect his health. He does need to have his tusks and hooves done, real soon. His shots will not be due til’ August. When getting a Vet to come to the house, he will need to sedate him for the tucks and the hoof wk.
Every now and again, I like to highlight a non-traditional animal companion – someone besides your “standard” cats and dogs – on the KCF blog. Because, hey, pigs and horses need love, too!
While it can sometimes be harder to find a farmed animal or “pocket pet” available for adoption – especially if you’re not lucky enough to have a farmed animal rescue group nearby – it is possible, with a little research and patience (and, of course, the internets!). Though Omaha may be a three-hour drive from KCMO, I’m sure Grunzzibutt is well worth the extra time and travel – that is, assuming pot belly pigs are your thing! If not, there are also plenty of horses, cows, chickens, turkeys, llamas, pigs and goats in need of new homes.

Save a life – adopt.

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.
We do this for several reasons:
- To highlight the plight of companion animals in the Kansas City area.
- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal.
- To encourage members to adopt a furry friend.
- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.
- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
