Featured Adoptables: Gio the Formerly Feral Kitten
July 8th, 2009 10:56 am by Kelly G.Update, 9/9/09: Gio has been adopted! (Was there every any doubt?)

This week I’d like to highlight Blue Skye Cat and Kitten Adoptions, LLC. Based in Olathe, the group
is a small rescue that assists area shelters and occasionally the public with cats and kittens that are too young to thrive in the traditional shelter environment and kittens that need extra socialization. Because of the alarming number of cats that are euthanized in shelters and cats that are left to fend for themselves on the streets, we strongly support spay/neuter and responsible pet ownership.
If you absolutely must have a kitten, Blue Sky is the way to go! By adopting from a rescue group, you save a life – and free up a spot so that the group can save another cat in need. And so the cycle goes. You can find a full list of their adoptable kittens here.
(Though I would also like to stress that adult dogs and cats are the bomb. Many of these young, middle-aged and senior adults come fully trained and socialized, so you don’t have to go through the hassle of teaching manners!)
Gio is one of the kittens currently available for adoption through Blue Sky. A Domestic Long Hair-black / Maine Coon mix,
Gio is a little feral kitten that is coming along nicely. He has a beautiful fluffy long-haired coat with a few tiny spots of white, one under his chin, one on his toes. He and his sister (we think) were found in a drainpipe and taken to Aid Animal Hospital. They called me and asked if I would work with a pair of ferals. He’s out and about in the kitten room and doesn’t protest when picked up.
He’s going to be gorgeous when he grows up with that fur! See the white spots on his toes??
His birthdate is estimated as 4/06/09 and his adoption fee is $75 each or $100 for a pair.
All of our animals are spayed or neutered, up to date on shots and worming, tested for feline leukemia and treated for fleas and ear mites. They also come with a free well visit with one of our participating vets. We thank these vets for being such a valuable part of our adoption process! An application is required prior to visiting our animals in their foster homes and to help ensure a good fit between adopter and adoptee. Please contact Mdeprima [at] kc.surewest.net for an application.
Don’t let Gio’s wild side scare you off. If rescued and socialized early enough, feral kittens can be domesticated. Experts suggest adopting former ferals in pairs, though, so make sure you have enough love for two little buggers!
To find out more about lil’ Gio, visit his Petfinder listing here.
As always, thank you for adopting!

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.
We do this for several reasons:
- To highlight the plight of companion animals in the Kansas City area.
- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal.
- To encourage members to adopt a furry friend.
- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.
- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
