Update, 2/10/10: Tanner has been adopted!

The animal companion adoption website Petfinder – which is where I locate about 99% of the animals I feature on the Kansas City Freecycle blog – highlights a recent “Happy Tail” on its main page, with stories rotating weekly. This week’s success story comes from the Kansas City area – Lake Lotawana, to be exact.

Erin, who adopted a dog from the Oak Grove-based Midwest Animal ResQ, writes,

I had never had a dog before, but after reading a story about puppy mills, I was inspired to adopt. Initially I thought I should get a puppy, and then I saw the picture of Jellybean. Although she is six years old, there was something about her and her story that pulled at my heart strings. She was a breeder/survivor of a puppy mill: What teeth she had left were in terrible condition, her paws were soft and spread from being kept in a wire cage for so long, she had had so many litters, her ribs had expanded…and she was terribly shy. Somehow I knew she was the dog for me. We have been friends now for three months, and she is the greatest! She is potty trained, knows her commands, and LOVES to go on boat rides. She is such a happy affectionate dog, and I can’t imagine how anyone could have mistreated her! Please rescue a dog! It will enrich your life!

Immediately upon reading Jellybean’s “tail,” I hopped on over to Midwest Animal ResQ’s page and quickly settled on Tanner, a teensy lil Chihuahua boy.

Tanner is a good looking young male Chihuahua with a very sweet nature. He weighs 10 pounds and is solid as a rock! We believe he is between 1 and 2 years old and very loveable and energetic. He likes to play with his toys and gets along great with other dogs, and our cat. He is quite a character and makes us laugh every day. He would love to run and play in your fenced yard or go for walks on a leash.

Tanner is heartworm positive and is now on treatment. He had his first treatment on June 17, 2009, and will have his second and last treatment in one month. He is on no additional medicine and there is no special care other than making sure he does not over exert himself until he is completely free of his heartworms which takes about 30 days. He has had his rabies vaccination, his DHPP Boosters, and is on advantage flea control.

Tanner has such a great personality he is going to be a wonderful buddy to his new owner. He is a bit shy at first, but warms up quickly and loves to be around you and get attention. He’s a little lover boy! We are working on housetraining and he gets better every day. He is quick to learn and wants to please.

If you would like to see more pictures of Tanner, or schedule a visit, please call [...] or email us. He can stay with us throughout his treatment or you can continue them from your home. Thank you for wanting a rescued pet…

Tanner is up-to-date with routine shots and spayed/neutered.

Like Jellybean, Tanner is in need of a happy tail; won’t you help give him one?

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.

We do this for several reasons:

- To highlight the plight of companion animals in the Kansas City area.

- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal.

- To encourage members to adopt a furry friend.

- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.

- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
