Update, 7/29/09: Oh, happy days! On 7/21, HSGKC reports, “WONDERFUL NEWS!!! PALMER HAS BEEN ADOPTED!” Awesomeness!

This lovely little lad is Palmer, a black Labrador Retriever/Pit Bull Terrier Mix currently staying with The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City. That’s right – Palmer is both black in color and a pit bull mix, a double whammy that makes his placement twice as difficult. In fact, Palmer might very well be our new Gramby – he’ll be four years old in just over a month, and has been with HSGKC since he was a wee lil’ pup. Let’s see if we can get Palmer adopted today, shall we?

Just look at that mug!

2/9/09: Palmer is a super friendly guy who loves to be with people. He’s very bright and he’s a nice size at 45 lbs. And sadly this poor little guy has been residing at our shelter since he was a tiny pup.

Palmer is a 3 year old Lab/Pit Bull mix. He has a very shiny black coat with a white chest and white on the tips of his toes. He’s a handsome guy.

Palmer is playful and he loves playing with other dogs and splashing around in the baby pools here at our shelter (you’ve got to see his video!). He’d be a good companion for another active dog. He’d also make an excellent jogging partner. And he’s a good sport about letting us dress him up as a clown for Halloween!

We’ve posted two Petfinder pages for Palmer so that we could display more photos of him so be sure to check out his other page.

Black dogs and Pit Bull mixes are the most difficult to find homes for, so that along with Pit Bull mixes being banned in several local communities has contributed to Palmer being overlooked and growing up with us. If you could give this lovable and happy boy a good home he’d be forever grateful, and so would we.

Palmer has been vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, and tested for heartworms.

Black dogs and pit bulls are commonly stereotyped as dangerous and vicious, though these prejudices speak more about the humans making them than the canines they target. Seriously – is this the face of a dangerous dog?

Methinks not!

Please spread the word about Palmer, and if you’ve got extra room in your home and heart, consider adopting this beautiful boy. You can view his Petfinder listings here and here, and learn more about the Humane Society’s adoption procedures here.

Or, if you’d like to help but are unable to adopt an animal at this time, why not sponsor one of HSGKC’s many residents?

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.

We do this for several reasons:

- To highlight the plight of companion animals in the Kansas City area.

- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal.

- To encourage members to adopt a furry friend.

- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.

- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
