Meet Abigail the domestic short hair/calico mix cat. She’s one of many lucky residents at the KattyShack in Smithville, MO:

Abigail is a strikingly beautiful cat. She is tall and lanky like a Siamese, but has the coloring of a calico even though her body is primarily white. She is a young, young adult at just a year or so old. She is very, very nice and seems fine with other cats. Abigail’s story is unusual but has a happy ending. She and her four 10-day old kittens were put in a carrier and left on a doorstep with a note saying that she was very sick. She wasn’t really sick but had obvious had some problems. After a thorough check up, lots of TLC, and a great place to raise her kittens, Abigail and all kittens are healthy, happy and ready for homes.

The charmingly named KattyShack

is an actual shelter, an open concept shelter where most cats and kittens are loose. Visitors can actually get acquainted with the cats, hold them, play with them, watch them interact with other cats and people. Most visitors spend an hour or so with the cats and kittens and really get to know them. Many times, the cat picks out its family!

KattyShacK is a 501(c)(3) , no-kill, limited intake cat rescue that always appreciates adoption referrals and donations!

Everything possible is done to find permanent, safe, and loving homes for the cats. Until adopted, the cats are well cared for (actually spoiled) –some cats stay for only days and some for years. And, we have a few feline retirees living at the KattyShack!

Adoption fees do not come close to covering veterinarian expenses or housing expenses for the cats. We desperately need donations to cover expenses. Donations of all sizes are greatly appreciated. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 74, Smithville, MO 64089.

Potential adopters are asked to complete and e-mail the adoption application that is on this site. There is a adoption fee required upon approval of an adoption application; the KattyShack has right of refusal on any and all applications. Depending upon the age of the kitten or cat, the adoption fee ranges from $65-$75. People aged 50 or above can adopt cats over five years of age for fee of $50.

You can see a full roster of the KattyShacks “guests” here.

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.

We do this for several reasons:

- To highlight the plight of companion animals in the Kansas City area.

- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal.

- To encourage members to adopt a furry friend.

- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.

- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
