40 weeks into our “Featured Adoptables” project, and I realized that we’ve yet to feature a reptile. While snakes, iguanas and such can be a little harder to find through traditional adoption routes, there are reptiles in need of loving homes.

Take, for example, Jessabelle the Red Tailed Boa, who is currently staying with Friends of Animals in Eldon, Missouri:

Jessabelle…what a beautiful girl! Jessabelle is a red tailed boa, 6 1/2 hrs old, and weighs around 35-40 lbs. Jessabelle measures around 7-8 feet long, and has alot of years left to live. She is sweet and calm and loves to be with people. Her new home must be familiar with this reptile, be set up to care for her and will give her that “forever home”. The new home can not have cats or small dogs in the home; it is the nature of the snake to perceive them as…well….a meal. Her adoption fee is $250.00. Please inquire with any questions. Can you open your heart and home to a new member?

Eldon is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from KCMO. If you’re looking to adopt an “exotic” (or even “farmed”) animal, interstate or long distance adoptions aren’t unusual. Try searching Petfinder and/or Google for a local or national rescue group that specializes in the type of animal you’re looking for. These definitely aren’t the type of animals you adopt on a whim, though - be sure to do plenty of research beforehand!

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.

We do this for several reasons:

- To highlight the plight of companion animals in the Kansas City area.

- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal.

- To encourage members to adopt a furry friend.

- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.

- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
