This week’s Featured Adoptable is Rory, a medium-sized female boxer. Her foster peoples at KC Angel Rescue have this to say about Ms. Rory:

Meet Rory! Rory is a beautiful black and white boxer that is approximate 1.5-2 years old. She is very very sweet and gets along with other animals. Rory was rescued from a high kill shelter, and her previous irresponsible owners did not have her on heartworm preventative, resulting in Rory testing heartworm positive. We are treating her condition and she will just need to have some extra TLC in the next 60 days. If you feel you can provide the forever loving home that Rory deserves, please contact us for an application!

Don’t let the heartworm diagnosis scare you. Even though Rory is marked as a “special needs” dog on Petfinder, heartworm is very a treatable condition. (You can read more about it on Wiki.) Our own Jayne (formerly Penelope) was diagnosed with heartworm - and completed treatment - before we adopted her, and she’s just the picture of good health now. Of course, you know what they say about an ounce of prevention - so if you do have any canine companions, be sure to have them on a monthly heartworm preventative, under your vet’s supervision, natch.

Each Wednesday, the Kansas City Freecycle blog will feature one adoptable animal from a local KC rescue group or animal shelter.

We do this for several reasons:

- To highlight the plight of companion animals in the Kansas City area.

- To remind members of our no-animal policy, and provide an alternative venue for members who wish to adopt an unwanted animal.

- To encourage members to adopt a furry friend.

- To help out out local animal rescue groups and animal shelters, many of which are overwhelmed by the sheer number of animals in need.

- To illustrate these animals’ unique personalities and characteristics, thus underscoring the fact that they are not objects and should not be “freecycled”.
